Spring is a good time to give your heating and cooling system some basic attention before warmer weather arrives. A few simple checks can help improve airflow, reduce strain on the system and make it easier to spot developing problems before the air conditioner is working at full capacity.

Replace or Check the Air Filter

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and make your HVAC system work harder than necessary. Check the filter and replace it if it looks dirty or clogged.

The right replacement schedule depends on the filter type, household conditions and how often the system runs.

Clear the Area Around the Outdoor Unit

Leaves, grass, branches and other debris can collect around the outdoor air conditioning unit during the winter.

Remove loose debris and make sure there is open space around the unit so air can move freely through the equipment.

Check Your Thermostat

Switch the thermostat to cooling mode and make sure it responds correctly. Check that the displayed temperature appears reasonable and that the system starts when the temperature setting is lowered.

If your thermostat is not responding or the temperature reading seems inaccurate, it may need service or replacement.

Check the Supply and Return Vents

Walk through your home and make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains or other objects.

Restricted vents can reduce airflow and contribute to uneven temperatures throughout the home.

Listen for Unusual Noises

When you first run the air conditioning system for the season, listen for sounds that seem different from normal operation.

Rattling, grinding, buzzing or other unusual noises may indicate that a component needs attention.

Watch for Weak or Uneven Airflow

Airflow should feel reasonably consistent from room to room. If some vents have very weak airflow or certain areas of the home are noticeably warmer than others, the system may need to be inspected.

Check for Water Around the Indoor Equipment

Air conditioning systems remove moisture from the air, and that moisture normally drains away through the condensate system.

If you notice water around the indoor HVAC equipment, a blocked drain or another condensate problem may be present.

Schedule Professional HVAC Maintenance

Homeowner checks can help identify obvious issues, but professional HVAC maintenance provides a more complete inspection of the system.

A technician can inspect system operation, airflow, electrical components, thermostat performance, condensate drainage and other areas that can affect heating and cooling performance.

When Should You Schedule HVAC Service?

Consider scheduling service if your system is not cooling properly, has weak airflow, cycles frequently, makes unusual noises or does not respond correctly to the thermostat.

Addressing problems before the hottest part of the season can help reduce the chance of an unexpected cooling failure.
